Heat Safety for Seniors: Protecting Yourself During Hot Weather

Heat Safety for Seniors: Protecting Yourself During Hot Weather

Did you know heatwaves are Australia's most deadly natural disaster?

Extreme heat kills more people than any other disaster and with climate change these events are becoming longer, more often, and more intense than ever before.

Prolonged heat exposure is dangerous, with over 65's at higher risk. As we age, it's harder for our body to cool and to feel higher temperatures, so we may not realise we are at risk until it's too late.

While many heat-related illnesses can be prevented through heat preparedness, a recent survey conducted by Griffith University's Ethos Project team with 547 older people revealed that 75% knew little about heat health consequences and 78% could not recall being informed of their increased vulnerability by a professional, even though 70% had at least one heat sensitive health condition.

Even more alarming, 35% didn't consider themselves personally vulnerable to heatwaves, despite believing heatwaves were a threat to other Australians!

BallyCara recommends using the following methods to stay safe over the summer period and during heatwaves:

  • Stay up to date with weather alerts and reschedule non-essential appointments and outdoor activities
  • If you do need to head outside, avoid the hottest part of the day! Instead try early morning or late afternoon
  • When outdoors always wear a broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, sun smart clothing with light coloured sleeves and seek shade.
  • Plan ahead and stock up on food and essential medicines
  • Have emergency contacts ready and a list of people to call when needed
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water and avoiding alcohol & caffeine. If you have fluid restrictions, ask your GP about changing your fluid intake to account for the heat
  • When at home close the blinds, turn on the aircon and/or fan and stay in the cooler part of your home. Wet towels will also help keep your body cool
  • Or seek air-conditioned spaces like the shops, cinema, library or a neighbour's house
