Restorative Care Pathway: Supporting Independence and Wellbeing

As we age, maintaining strength, confidence and independence can sometimes become more challenging.

The good news is that new support options are now available to help older Australians stay active and continue doing the things they enjoy.

At BallyCara, we are committed to helping people live well at home and in the community. One of the ways we do this is by supporting access to the Restorative Care Pathway - a short-term program designed to help people regain function and improve their independence.

What is the Restorative Care Pathway?

The Restorative Care Pathway is a short-term aged care program focused on early intervention and improving everyday function. Rather than providing ongoing support, it aims to help people rebuild their strength, confidence, and ability to manage daily activities independently.

Through personalised support and targeted therapies, the program helps individuals work toward specific health and wellbeing goals over a limited period of time.

What Support Can Be Included?

If approved through an aged care assessment, the Restorative Care Pathway may provide access to:

  • Up to 16 weeks of coordinated Allied Health services, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy or dietetics
  • A dedicated Restorative Care Partner who helps set goals and coordinate services
  • A care budget (approximately $6,000) to support the delivery of these services
  • Potential access to assistive technology or minor home modifications, depending on the assessment outcome

This structured approach ensures the right professionals are involved to support meaningful progress.

What Types of Goals Can it Help With?Health practitioner supporting a client in their home to regain independence through restorative care.

The program is designed to support a wide range of personal goals, including:

  • Improving mobility and balance
  • Rebuilding strength after illness, injury, or hospital stays
  • Increasing confidence with everyday tasks
  • Enhancing overall health and wellbeing
  • Maintaining independence at home

Everyone's goals are different, which is why the program focuses on personalised support tailored to individual needs.

How is it Different from Ongoing Aged Care Services?

The Restorative Care Pathway is short-term and goal-focused, meaning it is designed to help people improve their abilities rather than provide ongoing assistance.

For people who already receive home care services, restorative care may be provided in addition to existing support, offering a temporary boost aimed at improving independence and potentially reducing longer-term care needs.

Who Might Benefit?

The Restorative Care Pathway may suit older adults who:

  • Want to maintain or regain independence
  • Need short-term Allied Health support
  • Are recovering from illness, injury or reduced mobility
  • Would benefit from structured support to improve daily functioning

Eligible individuals may access up to two restorative care episodes each year, depending on their circumstances.

Taking the First Step

Exploring support options early can make a significant difference in maintaining independence and quality of life. If you or a loved one feel that short-term Allied Health support could help improve strength, mobility or confidence, the Restoratative Care Pathway may be worth considering.
