At the core of BallyCara's Village of Friends are powerful stories of connection, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.
One such story belongs to Kym, a remarkable client whose journey of recovery has blossomed into an inspiring act of selfless giving, perfectly embodying the heart of our community.
Sixteen years ago, Kym's life was irrevocably altered by a stroke. For many years, she navigated the complex path of recovery largely alone, struggling to find the right supports to help her regain independence and confidence. That difficult chapter began to close when Kym joined BallyCara's Short-Term Restorative Care (STRC) Program (now known as Restorative Care). Through the dedicated guidance of her coordinator, Kym accessed a range of tailored supports designed not only to help her regain lost function but, crucially, to rebuild her confidence and rediscover her passions.
Kym's positive experience in the program ignited a desire to give back to the community that had supported her transformation. This is where her story beautifully intersects with the tireless efforts of another vital group at BallyCara: the Carers' Auxiliary. Kym was introduced to Val, a long-standing member of this wonderful volunteer group, and a friendship quickly formed. Inspired by their commitment, Kym decided to put a lifelong passion to work, channeling her creativity into gratitude.
Sewing has always been one of Kym's joys, and she soon found purpose in crafting a beautiful range of handmade pieces to donate to the Auxiliary for their Christmas Fair. For Kym, this act of creation has brought immense joy and meaning, allowing her to combine her creative talents with a profound sense of gratitude, supporting others within the community that helped her thrive.
Kym's contributions are part of a much larger, quiet force that works behind the scenes to bring comfort, joy, and connection to our residents - our dedicated Carers' Auxiliary. Made up entirely of passionate village residents who generously give their time and energy, this group has had yet another incredible year of fundraising. Through their hard work at the Winter and Christmas Fairs, they have raised over $12,000 this year, with every cent going directly towards making life brighter for those living in our residential care homes and supporting the Peer Support Group.
In fact, the A
uxiliary has invested over $18,000 back into enhancing our residents' environment this year alone. Their efforts have funded beautiful improvements like the garden space in Heron, a much-loved area for families, soon to be complemented by a peaceful new gazebo. They've also funded new crockery for special occassions, ensured every resident receives a Christmas gift, and allocated funds for painting and freshening up communal areas.
The Carers' Auxiliary truly are commmunity shapers, giving their time to create initiatives that benefit everyone who calls BallyCara home, now and in the future. Kym's journey - from receiving compassionate care through the STRC program to becoming an active contributor to the Auxiliary's shop - is a powerful testament to the impact of BallyCara's values. It's a vivid reminder that the power of connection, care, and purpose is truly the beating heart of our Village of Friends extending to our wider community.
